Exceptional value for money ... and more ... I have just got back from a 6 night break at the Riviera Resort and Spa in Malta. First of all, I really cannot fault the hotel. I consider it to be excellent value for money. Although in a very quiet area, the hotel is well served by the myriad of yellow buses that swarm over the island, so it is quick and easy to get wherever you might want to go. Melliha Bay Beach is just a five minute ride away, and is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever visited - quiet and peaceful with great amenities. Clean golden sand, and shallow warm waters. Sheer bliss!

Back to the hotel. The pool area is fantastic, there is free internet, and the food is of a reasonable standard. I particularly enjoyed the breakfasts where there was a lot of choice. Being vegetarian, I found that the evening meals had plenty of veggie choice, and the soups and pasta in particular were always tasty.

But the best thing about the hotel is the wonderful staff. From reception to the restaurant, nothing is too much trouble, The staff are friendly, helpful, and caring. I particuarly wanted to acknowledge the hotel bar man, Ivan Drago. My husband happened to mentioned that he wanted a mojhito to drink, but the bar had no mint. The next day, Ivan appeared with some fresh mint that he had picked from his own garden so that he could make my husband his drink! How thoughtful is that? The service we received from Ivan was exceptional, and one of the highlights of our holiday was to go and sit in the coffee lounge after dinner and chat to Ivan and admire the wonderful panoramic sea views from the lounge.

However, the main thing I shall remember about Malta is the kindness of the people. On the second day of our holiday, my husband Nick woke in extreme pain and could barely move due to pain in his neck and back. Despite it being a Sunday, I called down to the hotel reception at 8.30 a.m. to request a Doctor. By 9.15 a.m. the Doctor had come to our room, given my husband an injection, and given us a prescription for medication. Dr. Robelli was extremely kind and sympathic and looked after my husband very well. We then had to go and get some medication in a village a fair bit away - as that was the only pharmacy open. We tried to go on the bus, but got lost and started to become anxious as my husband was not feeling well and we were worried that the pharmacy would close before we got there. We went into a hotel and ordered a taxi. A lady taxi driver called Amanda picked us up and took us straight to the pharmacy. She was genuinely concerned for my husband, and could not do enough for us. She was very kind and helpful.

So Ivan, Amanda, the hotel staff, and all the other Maltese people we met on our break - a heartfelt thank you for the warm welcome to your beautiful island. YOU made our holiday.

We are already planning our next trip to the Riviera and will be looking forward to one of Ivan's award-winning Mojhito's!

“Last minute honeymoon”

We changed our destination in the last weeks from Greece to Malta, so we had to find everything very fast. This hotel convinced us already based on the photos, and as we arrived we realized it was a good choice: in a quiet neighborhood just 10 steps from the sea, two minutes walk from the bus lines going to the Gozo Ferry and Valletta. The view is excellent, looking out to the Gozo Channel with the islands of Gozo and Comino. One of the largest sand beaches (Mellieha Bay) is a 10 minutes trip, if someone's interested (we weren't). The room was nice, beds comfortable, with both bath and showering possibility. The food tastes good, plus I got a very delicious cake for my birthday. Everyone in the hotel was very helpful, even unusual wishes they tried to accomplish. The only disadvantage of the place (not especially the hotel) is that the pipe water tastes strange, and bottled drinking water costs 2,60 Euro/bottle. I can recommend this place everyone, who doesn't go for nightlife or sandy beaches, but prefers a quiet place to walk, dive, or just to rest. Plus the island of Gozo (the one we liked more) can be reached and traveled (also using only ferry/buses) from here, and has very nice places - it was really the highlight of our trip.
